The same goes for page-turn buttons on the models with an asymmetric design, which make it easier to navigate a book while holding an ereader in one hand. That device is also capable of wireless charging, which Kobo doesn’t offer at all.Ī new and increasingly popular feature available from both Kobo and Kindle is Bluetooth, great for pairing wireless earphones, primarily for listening to audiobooks. However, only the Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition has a front light with an ambient light sensor that auto-adjusts its brightness. Most of the higher-end models also allow you to change the hue (or temperature) of the light from cold to warmer yellow for nighttime reading. IPX8 water resistance is available from both (except on the 10.3-inch models from both brands), as are adjustable illuminated displays for reading in the dark. Speaking of 8-inch models, you'll find those only with Kobo. However, in terms of design, every Kobo screen is covered in plastic, while Kindle has a couple of models that's topped with glass, giving them a premium look. All the current 6.8-inch, 7-inch and 8-inch models also have a 300ppi screen resolution across both brands. That mean, the lowest resolution is now on the Kobo Nia at 212ppi. While it's still available to buy in some markets, it's been replaced by the 2022 11th-gen Kindle that boasts a 300ppi screen resolution. The lowest screen resolution was on the 10th-generation Amazon Kindle at 167ppi. All the newer models (launched since 2021) use the E Ink Carta 1200 display that makes text appear sharper, with better screen contrast, as compared to the older E Ink Carta HD tech. When it comes to screen technology, both Kobo and Kindle ereaders are pretty much the same across the board. ![]() Subject 20's genetic design incorporates human DNA, and its method of killing is to inject its prey with the Proto B DNA strain which then proceeds to remove all genetic differences within specific cells. As Subject 20 continues to kill most of the station crew, the reason for the deception is revealed. When Subject 20 hatches from its cocoon, it begins killing the personnel at the station, starting with Jimmy, who was charged with cleansing the subject lab of the dead animal test subjects. The staff of the station includes the head of research, Gordon Hauser, his assistant Barbara Glaser, lab assistant Tracy Baxter, lab technician Jimmy Swift, electrician Brian Beale, the station's head of security, Earl Richards and Cal Timbergen, the medical doctor. After Colby settles in, his decision to terminate Subject 20 to prevent further deaths is met with research-minded secrecy and resistance. Military officer Mike Colby, accompanied by his robot assistant SAM-104, is called in to investigate the problem. However, Subject 20 mutates rapidly and uncontrollably and kills all of the laboratory subject animals before cocooning itself within an examination booth. This lifeform was built out of the synthetic DNA strain, "Proto B", and was intended to stave off a galaxy-wide food crisis. In the distant future, at a genetic research station located on the remote desert planet of Xarbia, a research team has created an experimental lifeform they have designated "Subject 20". The remake has minor variations but still retains the plot and character stylings of the original, also referring to the mutated virus as a "metamorph" as the original did. The film was remade in 1991 under the title Dead Space, on which Corman served as executive producer. The movie also makes use of footage recycled from the 1980 movie Battle Beyond the Stars, which was also produced by Corman. It is frequently paired with and compared to the previous year's Corman-produced Alien rip-off Galaxy of Terror, with which Forbidden World shares some of the same sets (designed by James Cameron). It was generally panned by critics as a cheap, exploitative imitation of the movie Alien, with sex, nudity, uneven editing, cheap special effects, and a sound design which some moviegoers found unpleasant, although the electronic music score produced by Susan Justin received mostly positive attention. The film received three nominations for the 1983 Saturn Awards: Best Low Budget Film, Best Make-up and Best Special Effects. Forbidden World has also been released under the titles Mutant and Subject 20. The cast includes Jesse Vint, Dawn Dunlap, June Chadwick, Linden Chiles, Fox Harris and Michael Bowen. It was co-edited and directed by Allan Holzman, who had edited Battle Beyond the Stars two years earlier. The screenplay was written by Tim Curnen, from a screenstory by R.J. Forbidden World, originally titled Mutant, is a 1982 American science fiction- horror film. ![]() ![]() AMPEG® is a trademark of LOUD Technologies, Inc.AKG® is a registered trademark of AKG Acoustics GmbH. ![]()
![]() The primary outcome measure will be between-group difference in the frequency of gout flares from baseline to 12 months. The intervention group will receive a daily supplement of tart cherry juice and the placebo group will receive a cherry-flavoured drink. The study is a 12-month, double-blind, two-armed, parallel RCT performed in adults aged 18 to 80 years, with an existing clinical diagnosis of gout and who have reported at least one gout flare in the last 12 months. As participants are likely to be at increased risk of CVD, secondary study outcomes will be measures of arterial stiffness and blood lipids. The study will also elucidate possible mechanisms of effect through the measurement of serum urate, fractional urinary urate excretion, biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress. The proposed study is a 12-month RCT designed to provide superior evidence as to whether tart cherries are a useful adjuvant therapy for treatment of gout. 36 There is a clear need for definitive evidence from a randomised controlled trial (RCT). 35 Notably, the UK’s National Health Service health information website dismissed newspaper claims that advocated cherry consumption for gout. 34 A content analysis of US and UK newspapers reported that 25% of articles discussing dietary management of gout advised cherry consumption. 1 29–33 Contrastingly, the Food and Drug Administration in the USA has warned cherry juice growers and processers against making preventive disease claims. 27 28ĭespite the limited scientific evidence base, leading medical societies and charities (for example, British Society for Rheumatology, European League against Rheumatism, National Institute for Clinical Excellence, Arthritis Research UK, Mayo Clinic, UK Gout Society) endorse cherry consumption as a therapeutic aid for gout. 18 21 Indeed, cherry consumption has been shown to lower a recognised biomarker of inflammation C-reactive protein (CRP) in both healthy people 18 24–26 and those with arthritis. These compounds may ameliorate the inflammatory response induced by monosodium urate crystals. In addition to lowering serum urate, cherry consumption may be of benefit in gout prophylaxis because cherries contain a variety of polyphenolic compounds with anti-inflammatory properties. 21 While there have been two intervention studies that have addressed the potential for cherry to reduce risk of gout, these were both feasibility studies with limited sample size, lack of an appropriate placebo and within-group statistical comparison. Furthermore being observational in design, causality cannot be assumed. 21 This study was predicated on an acute temporal relationship between cherry consumption and likelihood of gout flares and did not evaluate the habitual effect of cherry consumption. ![]() In a case cross-over study of 633 gout sufferers, cherry consumption was associated with a 35% lower risk of gout flares. There are very few studies in gout patients. ![]() 18–20 It is unclear which bioactive component in cherries may be responsible for the effect Bell et al proposed that anthocyanins and/or other phenolic compounds present in cherry may be important. 17 More recently, cherries and cherry products have been shown to acutely lower serum urate after consumption in healthy people, while a daily supplement of cherry juice was associated with lower serum urate in a placebo-controlled cross-over study of men and women who are overweight or have obesity. 11–16Įarly case reports from the 1950s suggested that consumption of cherries had a role to play in alleviating gouty pain and inflammation. 9 10 Consumption of purine-rich or fructose-rich food and drink, including seafood, red meat, beer and sugar-sweetened beverages have been associated with increased uric acid levels and risk of gout flares. Sustained hyperuricaemia, which most commonly occurs secondary to reduced fractional uric acid clearance, is recognised as the most important risk factor for gout. 7 8 Gout attacks are intermittent and may last from several days to up to several weeks. 6 The underlying cause is a build-up of monosodium urate crystalline deposits in the joints, particularly those of the lower limbs causing acute pain, redness and inflammation. 3–5Īcute recurrent attacks of arthritis, also known as flares, are a defining feature of gout. 3 Gout is associated with numerous comorbidities, including cardiovascular disease (CVD), obesity and hypertension. ![]() 3 Men are typically at greater risk of developing gout than women and risk increases with age for both genders. 1 2 The proportion of people afflicted with gout in the UK is substantial around 3% of adults were affected in 2012, representing approximately 1.9 million people. Gout is a debilitating and common type of inflammatory arthritis exerting a significant health burden. ![]() If there's a particular topic in math that you find challenging, look for a math workbook that focuses primarily on that math skill. Single-Cell RNA-Seq of the Adult Brain Identifies Discrete Cell Types We make this resource of 157,000 single-cell transcriptional profiles of two Drosophila strains available in a new single-cell visualization tool, called SCope, alongside other Drosophila and mammalian single-cell atlases ( ). Finally, we use machine-learning methods to accurately predict the age of a cell based on its gene expression profile. In addition, we map brain-wide cell-state changes that occur during aging. Here, we built a comprehensive atlas of cell types in the entire adult Drosophila brain, yielding nearly 1× “cell-coverage.” We also developed a Drosophila database for SCENIC ( Aibar et al., 2017), allowing us to map the gene regulatory networks underlying neuronal and glial types in the fly brain. Thus, comprehensive, unbiased brain-wide single-cell sequencing is expected to facilitate understanding of the cellular and regulatory basis of a brain and to provide insights on the gradual loss of fitness and cognition in aging ( Tulving and Craik, 2005, Wyss-Coray, 2016). Furthermore, during the lifetime of an animal, cell types and regulatory states may change, and the timing of normal and pathological loss of cell identity remains poorly described. Beyond the transcriptomes that underlie individual cell types, it is unknown whether brain-wide “regulatory states” exist that may be shared across multiple neuronal subtypes. It is an open question as to what extent neurons that build circuits with different spatial complexities, connections, and behavioral functions are controlled by different regulatory programs or whether they act as neutral building blocks in a circuit, committed to canonical neuronal communication. ![]() However, the molecular underpinnings of these cell types, such as the active gene regulatory networks and genes expressed in each cell type, have been less studied. Hundreds of neuronal types have been functionally characterized based on the morphology of their projections, their connectivity with other neurons, or their role in controlling behavior ( Robie et al., 2017). The Drosophila brain is ideal to build an atlas of cell types of a complex functioning brain because it encodes an extensive array of intricate behaviors ( Owald et al., 2015) while only consisting of approximately 100,000 cells, of which 85%–90% are neurons ( Kremer et al., 2017). However, a compendium of all cell types in a complete adult brain during the lifespan of an animal has not yet been reported. Single-cell technologies allow mapping of this diverse cellular landscape, and single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) performed on developing mouse and zebrafish brains ( Han et al., 2018, Raj et al., 2018) and on parts of the adult fly brain ( Croset et al., 2018, Konstantinides et al., 2018) have already revealed unique cell types. These results, together with SCope, allow comprehensive exploration of all transcriptional states of an entire aging brain.īrain function depends on a complex network of specialized neuronal and glial cell types. This single-cell brain atlas covers nearly all cells in the normal brain and provides the tools to study cellular diversity alongside other Drosophila and mammalian single-cell datasets in our unique single-cell analysis platform: SCope ( ). During aging, RNA content declines exponentially without affecting neuronal identity in old brains. Gene network analyses using SCENIC revealed regulatory heterogeneity linked to energy consumption. Our data show high granularity and identify a wide range of cell types. Cell clustering identified 87 initial cell clusters that are further subclustered and validated by targeted cell-sorting. We present a single-cell transcriptome atlas of the entire adult Drosophila melanogaster brain sampled across its lifespan. The diversity of cell types and regulatory states in the brain, and how these change during aging, remains largely unknown. When Inverse spoke to Leviathan over Discord to clarify the song's origins, he explained that it was adapted from another viral post by a user named CM Skits.
